Okay so let’s talk about those 4 factors.
DIFFERENCE 1 – CLICKS AWAY
Instagram is owned by Facebook and Facebook does as much as they can to keep people on their websites.
Pinterest on the other hand is completely fine with sending people away from Pinterest to a site.
You can think of Instagram as a prettier version of Facebook and Pinterest as a prettier version of Google.
DIFFERENCE 2 – TRAFFIC
Instagram absolutely has a larger amount of people on the platform as opposed to Pinterest.
Instagram has about 1 Billion users versus the 250 Million on Pinterest.
DIFFERENCE 3 – SHAREABILITY
According this Epipheo article the half-life of an Instagram post is about 19 hours.
Pinterest posts on the other hand have a half life of 3.5 Months.
ADVANTAGE: PINTEREST (BY A LOT)
DIFFERENCE 4 – WHY PEOPLE ARE THERE
When people go on to Instagram they’re often their to explore a bit, look at their friends or artists profiles and generally go there to relax.
So it’s very much a “personal brand” kind of website… think of your Kim Kardashians of the world.
Pinterest on the other hand is where people start planning to do things.
They make shopping lists, save pins for future
purchases and can easily be taken to other websites.
If you have a personal brand and don’t really plan to sell anything other than that then Instagram is better for you.
If you sell any kind of books, physical products, training programs or have a business you’d rather promote than yourself.
Plus there’s no reason why if a Pinterest pin is popular why it wouldn’t also be well received on Instagram (or vice versa)
PINTEREST (FOR PRODUCTS)
INSTAGRAM (FOR PERSONAL BRANDS)
