When I was very young, and losing teeth, there was always a narrative around helping them come out.
Regardless of the kid friendly TV shows I watched, there was one episode about someone tying their tooth to a doorknob and slamming the door to pull it out.
I was never successful with that approach.
But not for a lack of trying.
First off, tying a string around a baby tooth is extremely difficult. There is not a lot of space in your mouth at that age, and the baby tooth itself is usually tiny (mine were).
Second, figuring out the whole door part and having the courage to slam it is extra tricky.
In my case, in our house we had the hollow doors that seemed were probably made out of balsa wood.
So the few times I had the courage to slam them, the door simply stopped when the string reached its limit and gently came back toward me.
I tried the front door once, which was metal, but the string pulled out of my tooth and I chickened out of any subsequent attempts.
Pulling a tooth that way appeared to be a myth, based on my testing.
A couple of days ago, as I sat in my home office, I heard some screams and commotion coming from the other end of the house.
Little Ray came running to tell me they had successfully pulled my seven-year-old Isabella’s front tooth with a string tied to a doorknob. What? That works?
Turns out they used floss wrapped around the tooth a couple of times, and they solved the slamming of the door dilemma by her brother handling that part. So floss and an eager to help older brother are the secret.
It turns out; you are never too old to learn something new.
You just might be too old to use it on your baby teeth. Leap. Love. Grow.
