This past weekend we drove 30 hours across the US countryside, to spend Thanksgiving with my mom.
Inevitably, I end up telling stories to my kids about my childhood (since we are staying in my childhood home).
One of those stories involves me being in the West Geauga High School Marching Band.
There was a group of us that played soccer, and were part of the marching band. It was chaotic and also a blast.
What made our marching band special was making an extra effort in nearly everything we did.
One of our trademarks was something called the “Zah” step. Our director, Dr. Frank Tracz (pronounced Trace) coined the term and the step.
When he first interviewed for the job, he mentioned that our band had “Zah.” Zah means having something extra that no one else has.
Then he invented the “Zah” step.
We used it many times during the finales of our halftime shows.
Instead of straight marching, the Zah step was a quick short kick with the toe pointed, and a pause, with the foot just barely off the ground. Then that foot would step forward and the other would kick and pause.
The effect was extremely impressive to the audience. It would normally induce a large applause with cheers while we were still performing.
There were no other high school bands doing it, and not even college bands did it. Side note: Many high school bands march better than college bands.
Creating that kind of effect can really leave people highly impressed.
