My wife and I saw the new Elvis movie at the theatre this week.
It is really well done, and I highly recommend you check it out (if you like “The King”).
It shares how he persevered against the elements in society that were against him, but also how he was severely manipulated by his manager (the bit I did not know very well).
At one point early in his career, he would travel with multiple acts, and perform somewhere in the middle.
But he was far and away the most popular performer of these events, and the crowds would go crazy. After he would leave the stage, the frenzied fans were always in a state of waiting and hopeful for him to come back out, and play an encore.
This impacted the acts that followed, caused safety concerns, and general craziness.
So the venues started letting everyone know Elvis was gone by saying, “Elvis has left the building.”
That phrase has been used since as slang for many other things like home runs in baseball, people retiring, or even death.
