Milli Vanilli was a German-French R&B duo who hit the pinnacle of the pop music world in 1989. Their American debut album, Girl You Know It’s True, and hit single of the same name, took them from nothing to the top of the music world in one summit.
However, their success was short-lived and all came crashing down on Nov. 15, 1990. It was then that it came to light that the duo, made up of Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus, had been lip-syncing the entire time.
Someone else had written and performed the songs. This was after they had received a Grammy for Best New Artist and sold 7 million copies of the album.
They were singers and dancers, but not on this song and it sunk their careers.
I think about this today, because when I started out, there was a list of influencers I was keen to connect with. They looked good on paper (or should I say pixels because it was all on the internet).
I recall reaching out to one, who I thought would be a great long term partner.
When we got on the phone, he made sure to continuously point out that I did not have as many emails on my list as he did. That he was doing me a favor by talking to me.
I just decided to grin and bear it. (I would not do that now)
I invited him to be on my very first summit.
Turns out he had been lip-syncing about his audience (or should I call it “List”-synching).
He supposedly had this amazing list, and he sent exactly 12 people to the summit (he claimed a list of 20,000). He later went on to build a crypto scheme.
Meanwhile, I found and interviewed some people I had not heard of, who brought in 100s of enthusiastic attendees to the summit because they had built real platforms.
Another Milli Vanilli Influencer, who I had been enamored with, agreed to a call with me, and then more or less sent me to an Eyes Wide Shut style meeting (without all the sexual stuff), where a secret society of entrepreneurs had a secret, private dinner. Later he announced that his business went bust.
Sometimes you can learn things the hard way.
That is the beauty of building a real platform and making connections. You find out who are the stars and who are the Milli Vanillis fairly quickly.
