About three and a half years ago, I started coaching authors on marketing their books and building a platform.
It was $1000 a month, for weekly coaching, planning and tech setup.
After the first two clients signed on, I happened to have a call with my mom, and casually mentioned it.
Her immediate response was… “Who would pay you $1000 a month for coaching?”
I am not normally speechless with my mom, but it took me a few seconds to formulate a response.
In her defense, she is from the generation that still believes in “good, secure jobs” and that “the mainstream media does not lie.” She is still spellbound by the amounts of money things cost these days (even knowing about inflation).
So, I mentioned to her that I knew some things that the people I was helping wanted to know. Then I changed the subject.
You should never defend what you for a living do to people (even family) who have no understanding of your market or your value.
The fact of the matter is, I wasn’t even doing it for the money. Nothing she could have said would have got me down.
I was doing what I loved for the first time in my life. I was getting paid, regardless of the amount, to be in my flow state.
One of the ways to achieve that flow state is to recognize what you love, and also surround yourself with the right people, your ” Circle of Trust” if you will.
Then block out the other noise.

One of the things I do to get my books done is to first get the cover done (at least version 1).
Then I take it one step farther, I create a proof copy of the book (with the cover) and have it sent to me.
That way I has something physical to look at that motivates me to get it done. What’s on the inside?
Usually just a former book interior.
But this time I did something a little different. I created an interior like a journal (just 100 pages of lines to write on).
That way I can use the book as motivation, a prop (for talking about it on video), and a place to put notes and ideas as I write it.
And this time, I am doing it in 30 days using Troy Broussard’s program.

Most of us think authorship is a solo game.

Yesterday, I overheard a conversation between my wife and kids.
My wife, who has revived speaking Spanish to the kids asked them to do something. I didn’t catch what she said myself, I was preoccupied getting coffee.
But I did hear my daughter, who is eight, respond with… Uhh? Can you just say that in English?
I burst out laughing.

In 1519, Hernán Cortés led a large expedition to Veracruz, Mexico. It consisted of approximately 600 Spaniards, 16 horses, and 11 boats.
The goal was to capture the ” magnificent treasure” said to be there.
When they arrived, Cortés gave a historical order. He made his men to destroy their own ships.
He wanted to send a clear message to the men. There was no turning back now. They would either succeed in their quest or they would perish.
With no exit strategy, one might assume that the men would have either become despondent, or rebellious toward Cortés.
However, when looking at their options, they really had no other choice. They rallied behind their leader as never before. Within two years, the conquest was successful.
In modern society, we hardly ever burn the boats. Yet, you can do so figuratively in any number of ways.
When I joined my first anthology (my very first book), I invested 7k. It made sense, because I knew I would get it done. Investing that much money was me burning the boats.
So this past Wednesday, when Troy Broussard suggested I burn the boats to write my next book, I realized if I wanted to get it done, I had no other choice.
Not only did I pay to be in his program, I also committed to Troy that my next book will be written by the end of March, or I will refund anyone else who joined his March program through me. That could be 1000s or 10s of 1000s of dollars out of my pocket if I don’t succeed.
That is how I know I will.
