The P.T. Barnum Strategy

This past week, we watched The Greatest Showman. This was the first time for my kids, and they loved it!
I recall going to the circus as a child, with a short list of what I wanted to see.
I loved the trapeze, the elephants and the lions.
Those were my main reasons for going.
Inevitably, however, I would leave the circus loving some of the other amazing acts just as much.
The part where they invited all the kids to come down and ride in carriages around the arena as part of the finale comes to mind.
There were amazing horse riders, sword swallowers, tiger tamers and many other acts that I left the event raving about.
Plus, of course, the cotton candy.
Now, had you mentioned these other acts prior to going, in hopes of luring me to the circus (without my favorites included), I would not have been nearly as interested.
I came for certain acts, and left loving some new ones. This was P.T. Barnum’s strategy: provide a wide variety of entertainment to attract all types of people with different interests, and they will fall in love with the other acts once they are there.
The same is true when you are just starting out as an author.
It can be hard to get more eyes on your “act” in the beginning.
But if you can showcase your talent alongside others, you can attract and build your own audience and readership.
It is a way to get more eyes on you and your work.
Rather than waiting years for your name to be in headlines, you can jump start the process.
When you take part in an anthology, you have multiple authors bringing attention to the book, which in turn brings eyes on you, as a co-author.
I call it crowdsourcing an audience.
That is why I host, and also participate in, as many anthologies as possible.
With an anthology, I know there will forever be multiple authors bringing attention to that book, and as a result, more people will be introduced to me and my work.
That is just one of the many reasons I think a well-run anthology is one of the Greatest Shows on Earth for Authors.

The George Costanza School of Self-Publishing

There is this classic episode of Seinfeld called The Reverse Peephole.
There are a lot of storylines and subplots in this episode, but the primary revolves around the group planning to pool their money together and buy a massage recliner chair as an apartment warming gift for a friend.
George proclaims himself the one in charge of buying the chair, because he has a “ sixth sense for these sorts of things.”
He infers that he is good at finding deals.
To which Jerry replies, “ Cheapness is not a sense.”
Since the gift is a surprise, George has it delivered to his apartment to hold until the housewarming party.
While keeping the chair safe, George becomes addicted to sitting in the chair, and because of this denies having even bought the chair yet.
As the days pass, the rest of the group, for various reasons, turn sour on the whole idea of going in on the gift.
As George procrastinates revealing he has already bought it, the group one by one drop out of the commitment.
This leaves George with the chair, which he can decidedly not admit he had purchased at this point.
Most starting authors have probably had this same sort of procrastination.
I call it the George Constanza School of Self-Publishing.
I suffered from it for a long time myself when I started.
We become experts at excuses (we can come up with all kinds of good reasons to procrastinate), but not at the actual execution of writing and publishing. “I don’t have enough time.” “I need to take one more class.” “I can’t afford the editors, formatters, cover designers, and marketing” I need someone else to read and approve my manuscript.
Admittedly, I never suffered from this last one.
The truth is…
To become confident in something, all it really takes is committing to it one way or another.
I had 15 years of sticky notes in a folder of ideas and books I was “going” to write.
I used those same excuses above.
Then one day, at a conference, I walked by a vendor booth advertising an anthology.
All I had to do was write one chapter, then I would have a book and be a bestselling author.
The price tag for that book was steep (7k), but the monetary commitment would ensure I would stop the procrastination madness, and finally become an author.
That quick decision and commitment changed the trajectory of my career.
It also motivated me to learn more.
A year and a half later I was a “book guy” and helping others.
And participating in that anthology inspired me to create my own series of anthologies (with a much lower price tag).

Does this cross the “creepy line”?

There is this documentary on Netflix called The Creepy Line.
It is about how big tech social media claim to ” approach the creepy line, but not cross it” in regards to your personal data and what they use it for.
It is quite disturbing.
In fact, I watched this long before the current revelations about the government secretly telling social media companies who and what to censor. They even reveal how they can modify public opinion toward the preferred narrative by showing posts they will know makes each type of person angry.
Scary, but probably worth a watch.
The flip side of the creepy line is the data you want people to know about you, especially when it comes to your expertise and your business.
Whether you are an author, speaker, coach, course creator, thoughtleader, or any other type of expert….
Are you doing enough of the type of data sharing you need to be?
How easy is it for people to make a first impression about you before even speaking with you?
I am not talking about typical social media posting and telling each other what you had for breakfast.
Here are some things I have heard from people I met this year: “Ray, I looked around online and I like the kind of things you are doing.” “Ray, I know who you are…let’s connect.” “Wow, I can’t believe how many books you have written.” “I looked you up on Amazon, and you are serious about your craft based on the number of books you have published.”
What I realized was they were really saying was: “Ray, I see your Amazon Author account and I see you have written a bunch of books on the subject of _________.”
It is easy to see (or even assume) one’s level of authority online.
And a lot of that has to do with the number of books in your author library (those that you have authored OR co-authored).
It is also easier than you think to beef up the number of books your name is attached to or get your name as the author on that first book.
Just join with other authors and create anthologies.

You can lead an Author to Water, but you can’t make him Think

Last week, during the midst of our highly successful Bestseller Secrets Summit, I received an email.
The sender wanted to send me a free copy of his book, and autograph it, if I would send him my home address.
I had never met or spoken to him before, so I tagged it to review and respond later. (I don’t give out my address to strangers, and as a practice, I don’t accept unsolicited gifts either – more on that later)
A couple of days passed, and I got a second email. It started… I know this is the worst time to ask , being in the middle of your summit, but I wanted to offer you a free, autographed copy of my book (on fishing). Just send me your address, I will even write dedication to your kids.”
It was already tagged to review, and yes, I was occupied with peak summit time, receiving 1000s of emails per day.
But I was also getting a strange feeling about it. Nevertheless, I left it in my review file for later.
Monday morning, after the exhausting final weekend encore of our summit, I walked my groggy self to my office and opened up my email.
There was email #3. “Ray, this is my THIRD AND FINAL offer for me to send you a copy of my book that I will autograph for you.”
Wow. So, you knew it was the worst time to ask, you still did, and then got angry when you didn’t get what you wanted?
Ironically, this is someone who claimed to be “watching” the Bestseller Secrets Summit, which had a common theme of relationship building (and certainly not book pushing) among the speakers.
I guess you can lead an author to water, but you can’t make him think.
I am not sure how many people would want a free book after receiving an ultimatum like that, but I am not one of them.
I ran it by one of my mentors and he shared that ” you should not accept unsolicited gifts from people you don’t know, because there is a good chance they now believe you owe them something.”
After hearing that, I could already see that in the tone in his last email. It was like I already owed him something, because he had offered it. So, what is the right thing to do if you want to connect with people?
Always be relationship building. But especially from the point of not expecting anything in return. There is only one reason someone would get angry (or snippy) about someone not immediately accepting a free gift.
For creating and building relationships, one of my favorite methods is collaborations (like virtual summits, podcast interviews, or anthologies).
That is why I run multiple anthologies every year, because it helps people get connected (to me and others) via association, as co-authors of a book.
In fact, many of my partners today were people who participated on one of my earlier anthology books (a great example is my book Author Inc).

Crowdsourcing a Bestseller

We have all been through it.
You spend all your blood, sweat and tears writing your future “bestseller”…
…only to find out, there is way more to it.
You need a cover, a professional cover (not one you personally throw together on Canva).
You need an editor.
You need someone to look over what you wrote and make sure “it is good.”
Then you need a good book description.
You need to choose categories and keywords.
Then you need a launch plan. You need to figure out what type of marketing works, and then time it all properly. Which is almost impossible if you haven’t already done it many times. Even then, will people buy it? Will they read it?
That is why many people will start writing, but never finish.
It can be incredibly overwhelming.
That is why authors look at hiring Done-For-You services, to get it all done for them. But those aren’t cheap, even if they handle everyone of those items mentioned above.

I can recall the very first email I sent to Alinka Rutkowska. I introduced myself to her, and asked her if she wanted to connect and see if we could work together.
Her response was, “I know who you are.” (referring to the bunch of books in my portfolio on Amazon).That was the day we starting working together as JV partners, and became great friends.
She introduced me to Paul Brodie. We became fast friends and partners as well.
I was introduced to Rob Kosberg, we hit it off right away, and have worked on projects ever since.
Nick Stephenson and Derek Doepker were both super cool to me via email, when no one knew who I was.
Brian Berni invited me to my first opportunity to speak on a virtual summit.
Jonathan Green accepted me as a book swap partner before he knew who the heck I was.
I just met Tom Antion last week, a hilarious guy and an OG (original gangster) of the digital marketing world.
Karen Ferreira and I connected when we were both launching our first virtual summits (in fact she encouraged me to do it).
Richard McCartney and I were clients of each other, before we knew who each other personally.

Traveling at Anti-Ludicrous Speed

In the 1987 film, Spaceballs (a Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars), Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis in the mock role of Darth Vader) tells Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) to hurry after Lone Star’s ship.
Lone Star is Bill Pullman’s character who is a combination of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.
Colonel Sandurz says: ” Prepare for light speed.”
Dark Helmet says: ” No no no, Light Speed’s too slow!”
Sandurz: ” Light Speed too slow?”
Dark Helmet: ” We’re gonna have to go right to – Ludicrous Speed!”
Apparently, ludicrous speed is significantly faster than light speed.
Reminds me of my journey to that very first book launch.
Everything felt like slow and stressful, kinda like “Anti-Ludicrous Speed.”

How not to market your book (in one sentence)

Got a response to an email I sent yesterday (about the now closed Bookfunnel University).
All it had was a link to a book.
No, ” Hello, my name is…”
No, ” You don’t know me but…”
No ask, no actual understanding if I am even in the target market.
Just a link to a book.
I can confirm this is not how to market your book. Do not send unsolicited links to your book (even if you add a hello, my name is line to it).
That almost never works, and probably has the opposite effect.
Now, if someone subscribes to YOUR email list, then that is totally fair game, and you have already made some kind of connection with them prior.

How Southpark made Tommy Lee Jones funny

A few of decades ago, at the peak of Southpark fame, an interesting thing happened at the Oscars.
Tommy Lee Jones (who was riding a wave of popularity from The Fugitive and a slew of other films) was scheduled to announce the Best Picture Award at the end of the show.
It was nearly three and a half hours into the show, and he was waiting backstage to head out for his emcee cameo. The problem?
Tommy Lee Jones is pretty much the definition of a stoic. His standard character in movies is his real life persona, a frowning intellectual and serious guy.
He runs into Trey Parker and Matt Stone backstage (the creators of Southpark and some goofy guy-type films).
Tommy says, ” I wish I was funny like you guys. I don’t even know what to say when I go out there.”
Trey and Matt, say that is easy, just use this one line.
Tommy Lee Jones, walks out on stage, stone-faced, to deliver the announcement of Best Picture to a crowd that has been sitting for 3.5 hours and says… “We have reached the most important part of the evening…the halfway point.”
The crowd erupted in laughter (probably mostly because it was serious Tommy).
You never know when one encounter or idea will create a changing event for you.
Tommy Lee Jones made his big day on stage one where he delivered a great joke, just by his conversation with Trey and Matt.
