Why you should tell people NOT to buy your book

This will sound crazy, but it works.

And it will make complete sense when I am done, so hear me out.

One of the things I make sure I always include in my book descriptions and sales pages is what I call “Words of Discouragement.”

It is a little pun on the phrase you normally hear for encouraging others.

The idea is suggesting that your book is not for everyone, and then explaining exactly who should NOT buy your book.

For many of my books, I let people know “there is no easy button” or “this is not for lazy people” or “don’t buy this if you are always looking for some type of hack.”

The idea here is twofold.

One, you only want people to buy your book that will read it and apply it.

Two, the type of people you exclude are generally the types that would leave a bad review.

_But I want as many sales as possible right?_

That is another longer, separate discussion, but you really want as many sales as possible from the_ right _people.

Because, you will also list who the right people are, and frame it in such a way that they are in an exclusive club.

This book is for “go-getters” “big thinkers” and “visionaries” who are not afraid to “roll up there sleeves” and “put in the work.”

This puts your book buyers in an exclusive category that is right for your content (one they want to be in) and sets the expectations for the people who will read your book.

A Magician’s Trick to Writing Your Book Description

Have you seen the movie _THE PRESTIGE_?

It is kind of a dark take on old magicians and the supernatural.

What I love about it is how they divide a magic trick into three parts.

Per Michael Caine in _THE PRESTIGE_:

> Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. THE FIRST > PART IS CALLED THE PLEDGE. The magician shows you something > ordinary, a deck of cards, a bird, or a man. He shows you the > subjects. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed > real, unaltered, normal. But of course it probably isn’t. > > THE SECOND ACT IS CALLED THE TURN, the magician takes the ordinary > something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re > looking for the secret, but you won’t find it because, of course, > you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want > to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet. Because making something > disappear isn’t enough. You have to bring it back. > > That’s why EVERY MAGIC TRICK HAS A THIRD ACT—THE HARDEST PART, THE > PART WE CALL THE PRESTIGE.

When I was finalizing the framework I use for writing book descriptions, and sales copy for sales pages, it fit perfectly into these three categories.

So, I nicknamed my framework The Prestige Framework.

The Pledge is essentially your header. This is what we use to draw people in to learn more about the description.

The Turn consists of three parts introducing the content of your book, and uses some interesting counterintuitive approaches to keep them interested.

And The Prestige is what convinces them they absolutely must know more.

I have a formula for each section, but more importantly the entire process is a framework. I can use it over and over again in order to much more efficiently create very compelling copy to sell my books.

How Zeus can help you write a great book

One of the first things I do nowadays, when I start out writing a new book is what I call Zeus Bookwriting.

The idea is pretty simple (but powerful).

Before you do anything else, write the book description for your book for Amazon.

And when you do, write it as if you have unlimited powers (like Zeus).

Write your book description (without judging) and assume there is nothing you cannot help the reader accomplish anything in the particular niche.

The sky is the limit.

Then when you are done, see what you can do to accomplish what you have written.

Obviously, you will remove some items. But you will be stunned at what else you can offer in your book that you previously would have thought impossible.

It is a really powerful (and fun) exercise.

And I am using it for 5 new books right now.
