Obvious answer: your book.
Unless, of course you haven’t written it yet.

Many years ago, my friend Jim Small gave me a book called The 4 C’s Formula by Dan Sullivan.
It is a quick but very impactful read.

One of the main concepts of the book is that (it is the 4th C). confidence comes last Most people wait until they are confident they will succeed in something, before they start. Yet, the truth is that confidence comes after the other 3 C’s.
The first C is Commitment, then Courage, Capability and only then Confidence.
To simplify, you must commit to doing something long before you will ever feel confident in doing it.
This goes for anything you are new at, especially writing books.
I wanted to write a book for multiple decades before I ever did. It wasn’t until I invested multiple thousands of dollars to join an anthology book with Jack Canfield, that I actually became a published author.
That newfound confidence that I was an author opened the flood gates.
I proceeded to write about 20 more books over the course of a couple years.
But the first step was committing to it. I committed financially, and to a deadline.
It worked.

I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was November 2020.
In a group coaching call, I asked my coach and mentor, Troy Broussard, what I should do for a continuity program. I was planning a course of the month club service.

When I wrote my first solo book, the process took me ten months. I was inspired. I had dreams of creating an entire series of books for entrepreneurs.
There were a couple of problems though.
For one, I was gassed by the end. I looked at the amount of royalties I was making and the production time of ten months, and writing that next book did not seem worth it.
Two, the entire process was all over the place. I knew my topic, but getting that down onto paper felt like a grind. The more roadblocks I hit, or concepts I didn’t understand, the more it made it easy to procrastinate.
During one patch, I used the excuse that I hated self-editing by reading aloud, to delay over a month.
So at the end of those ten months, I had to reassess the entire idea of becoming an author with more than one book.
I sat around for two weeks, further depressed about low royalties.
Then I made a decision.
The only way I could become a prolific author was to create a writing framework that worked for me. One that I enjoyed, but also allowed me to write books faster.
That turned out to be the key. Creating my own framework, and constantly tweaking it.
On my next book, I went from idea to published in 26 days.
And to this day it is my most popular book ( The Author Startup). But I would not recommend others follow my path. There is a faster way to create your own framework.
You will save time and heartache by simply borrowing someone else’s framework on your first attempt. Get that first try done, and then fine tune it and make the framework your own.
Oh, and also realize you will continue to fine tune your framework forever.
In fact, I am about to fine tune mine again.

Raise your hand if this happens to you.
You buy a new shiny course (say on running ads for your book).
You are sure this course is the thing that will change everything.
You go through the course, and especially if it is long, the novelty fizzles out.
You learned a lot, and there were also a few things you didn’t quite understand.
But then you see it. There is another course that has the missing piece of the puzzle.
And the cycle repeats.
You never quite learn enough to take action.
There is always something missing. It is small, but we just need that next course to get it.
Does this sound like something you are familiar with?
I can describe it so well, because that was me starting out.
It isn’t that the courses themselves are sub-par.

I was a course collector for a few years before I felt confident enough to start.
Those years would have been better used by simply taking action.
But action is tough if you are just taking a course, and trying to fill in all the knowledge and skill gaps by yourself.
Coaching or a Done-For-You service can really help get you into the game. But those services cost more, right?
Well, upfront they do.
But when I add up all the courses I have bought in my career, intending to do it all myself, they add up to a lot more than if I had just hired someone to get me going.
The scary thing about getting expensive help is the risk of something not working after that high price tag Then we are back to buying more courses.
But I see something on the horizon that may change quite a bit in the marketplace (across all niches). The rise of guaranteed results.
The idea is that you hire someone for a Done-For-You service, or Done-With-You service, and they guarantee some sort of outcome.
It could be simply that you will earn your money back, or get 1000 readers or something beyond just the service itself.
Admittedly, that is not easy for the providers to offer and they can only offer it to qualified clients.
But I think it may be commonplace in the next few years.
Hopefully, it will be something you do on the back end of your book as well.

In the news lately is the fact that Facebook (now identifying as Meta), may shut down its service (including Instagram) in Europe.
The issue is around data privacy. Facebook uses something called Privacy Shield to transfer user data back and forth between the US and Europe.
Problem is, the legality of that is considered invalid as of July 2020.
If a new data transfer framework is not approved, Facebook is going to pull the service from Europe.
This can cause a lot of pain to those who have build focused solely on building audiences via Facebook. That is a significant audience that might go away.
I was somewhat lucky to see the writing on the wall (long before the current censorship started).
The #1 way to protect your business and the longevity of it, is to control the access to your audience. When you use a third party as access to your audience, you risk losing it all in one swoop.
You can either have your account closed, or they may shut down access to part or all of your audience (which may happen to anyone who has part of their audience in Europe).
That is why I am always pounding the table to start your email list asap. And by the way, if you haven’t yet, here is a secret.
Everyone starts their email list at zero. You just have to start.

Back in my 20s, I visited Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. One day we took a tour out into the country, to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels. They were used by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War.
They were underground tunnels in the middle of the jungle, that allowed the fighters to take some shots and then essentially disappear into thin air. They were dark, humid and small. Not a great place for claustrophobics.
After the tour, and a 1960s Communist War propaganda film, we were offered the chance to fire M16s and AK47s, the weapons of choice during that time period.
I had never fired a gun before, but it seemed like a good time to try. The cost was $1 a bullet which was pretty good money in Vietnam at the time.
I chose the M16 first, and the soldier loaded it, and put the barrel of the guns into a wire bracket that limited where it could be fired. This obviously made everyone feel safer.
But that was where the instruction stopped. Go ahead and fire was the final advice.
I had no idea if there would be any kick, or even how to aim. There was simply a dirt hill about 50 yards away.
I decided the best approach would be to fire once, with minimal aiming just to see how it all worked.
As I pressed the trigger, a bunch of dirt popped up into the air on the dirt hill, about 10 yards to the right of where I thought I was aiming. Ok, I thought, now I have some idea of how this is going to work.
My second shot came much closer to where I was aiming, and the third showed just how useful the sight on the rifle could be.
I could have spent 10 minutes aiming that first shot, to try to get it where I wanted it to go. But it was far quicker to take that first shot and then re-calibrate.
The same idea goes for everything you are doing with your book or online business. You can calibrate all you want up front, but until you take that first shot, you have no idea what to adjust.
It is far quicker and more efficient to take your first shot, then re-calibrate on your next one. Leap. Love. Grow.

Growing up, I lived on a 3/4 mile, no outlet street with lots of kids.
Almost every day, there was some sort of game starting up, football, basketball, softball…
My age group were the younglings of the games. The kids a few years older were very good athletes, and we got to learn from them.
Inevitably, playing with skilled, older kids made us much better ourselves.
The only downside to these games was they were pickup. Two team captains would pick teams until everyone was picked.
For kids on the street, there was stigma to being picked last. But also, the sooner you got picked the prouder you were that day.
So we all improvised to improve our lot. We would stand by the good older kids, so we would get more looks.
Sometimes we would smile big when the captain of our preferred team was looking our way.
Sometimes we would pretend not to care, which was meant to show that we were a good choice.
Friends that were already chosen may whisper a quick tip about you to the captain, to gain some favor.
The only people who did not stress about this were those that were known quantities. These were usually the older players who every one new could throw and catch.
But if you were new, or younger, or the captain was new, you had to somewhat market yourself. You could not just sit and wait to be noticed.
The same goes in publishing. You can write and publish an amazing book. But that doesn’t mean you will get noticed.
Authors that do are actively trying to get noticed, by asking for reviews, testimonials and submitting their books to contests.
