One of the biggest fears I had when I was starting out was bad reviews.
I recall wishing I could just publish and hit bestseller without anyone actually reading my book. That way I would be sure there would be no bad reviews.
And while I now believe bad reviews are good for your book, it still hurts when you get a bad review.
Turns out I didn’t know the half of it.
There are trolls in them hills too.
These unhappy people will cuss and complain on your Facebook Ads, send you nastygram emails, and the like, simply for you daring to put yourself out there.
Then I started reading Ben Settle’s daily emails, his high ticket books and his physical newsletter.
He even sells a high end book called Copy Troll, which shows you how to profit from trolls.
Case in point: Back when he was on social media, a rapper, who didn’t like Ben’s politics, tried to slander Ben and his customers calling them “White Supremacists” and “Nazis” and “Racists.”
This was long before main stream media adopted those terms as default words for every news cycle.
Ben used the incident to create a 5 day campaign which brought in a whole load of new emails to his list, and nearly 30k in new business.
I have used the same methods, and they work beautifully. And it is very therapeutic to make money from someone who is trying to trash your work. Wouldn’t it be great if you could revel in the noise and profit from those haters?

About 18 months ago, I made a comment to a peer about how well he handled trolls and generally negative people.
He openly shared his experiences in his daily emails.
His response was, ” Then, you should check out Ben Settle.”
That small comment ended up changing a great deal in my world. My view of my business, branding, books, etc has completely changed for the better.

When my son was 5 years old, he came into my office and picked up a paperback copy of my book The Author Startup.
He said, I want to have a book.
We then came up with an idea to involve his entire pre-school class.
We came up with an anthology about dreams.
Each child was asked to dictate to the teacher a dream they remembered. Then they would also draw a picture of the dream.
We put them all into a book, and published it to Amazon.
I will never forget when the physical book arrive. I opened the box, and handed one to Little Ray.
He got this huge smile and yelled, “YEAAHHHHAHHH!”
He was so proud and happy.
Two years later, my wife told me the rumor around the pre-school was that it was like a lottery drawing to see who got my daughter into their class because it came with the book project. You are obligated to do it again, she told me.

A couple of days ago, I was rushing out of the house for an appointment.
As I went to ensure the driveway was clear, I noticed what appeared to be a very large worm, about the size of a small straw.
Turns out it was a baby snake.
Knowing my daughter is super into catching bugs and other types of creatures right now, I called to her in the back yard.
Side note, I have no idea where she gets it, I was never like that. When I was little I would change directions in a full sprint if I saw a snake.
It was obvious it was not a worm by the way it seemed to be sidewinding its way on the driveway.
When she got to me, she was completely obsessed with catching it.
It took a few minutes, but I finally swiped it into a plastic container with the lid of the container.
As she proudly walked away with her new “catch,” she shouted… Yeahhhh! We got a snake y’all !!!!!!!
She sounded like a teenager (she is only 7), though she has always been very mature for her age.
I laughed out loud, and asked her where she learned that phrase (meaning the ” y’all” part).
She said, King Julien says that all the time.
She was referencing the King Julien series on Netflix (an off-shoot from the Madagascar movies).
It never ceases to amaze me the little things can have an impact on kids.
That is why I think it is every author’s (or potential author’s) duty to share their creativity with kids through children’s books.

The Pumpkin Plan is a book by Mike Michalowicz that describes a simple strategy to grow a remarkable business in any field.
The idea behind the pumpkin reference is that Mike learned the secrets of pumpkin farmers and how the best pumpkins were grown.
It turns out, if you want to grow really great pumpkins, you have to focus on the best ones on the vine. Then trim the lesser performers off the vine (thus allowing all the nutrients and focus of the plant to be on the best). Focus on the best parts of the plant, trim the rest and those best was become that more successful.
Sounds like that could apply to business, right?
I see many authors (myself included) trying to do too many things, and never really focusing on the things that work and simply making those better.

True story.
A couple of years ago, I started my very unsure journey of reaching out to influencers.
Prior to learning how easy it is to do when you are hosting a summit, I was using more of what could be described as the cold call method.
I would email influencers directly, give them some mutual contact names or mutual niche information, and see if they would respond.
Most did, and very politely.
It is amazing what happens when you simply ask.
But there was one strange occurrence that I will never forget.
I reached out to an influencer I looked up to, let’s call him Benjamin.
He seemed to be doing very well, I saw his name all over Amazon and other lists I subscribed to.
We got on a zoom, and he was very pleasant. Except for one small item…
He seemed to have this need to make sure that I realize I was a little bit lower class than he was because my email list was not quite to 10,000 yet.
I believe I would have reacted differently now, but at the time I was in growth mode and smiled and bit my tongue.
It struck me as a bit odd that you would treat someone that way, especially someone who was clearly working hard enough to reach out and connect.
Besides, list size makes little difference if the list is not engaged.
I would find that out for myself months later, when he promoted a summit of mine.
Based on the number of registrations and sales, you would assume he had a much smaller list. It is funny how you kind find out who is , simply by having them on your summit. skinny dipping when the tide goes out
Since that time, I have seen him dabble in this and that, moving from one thing to the next until he moved to promoting crypto currency and selfies in front of a rented mansion.
It felt like a new movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Bitcoin.
I have seen that happens to others (and I know full well I am not immune).
What I believe it comes down to is a lack of focus and clarity.
Now Benjamin may survive it, because it seems the clarity started becoming a problem long after he built his business.
But for those starting out with a book, if you don’t have clarity, you can shoot yourself in the foot before long before you get off the ground.
