Happy New Year and welcome to 2022!
New Years Day is a day we can overburden ourselves with resolutions and goals.
What I have found is that simplicity is key in all things.
There is no need for a long list of crazy goals or resolutions.
So for 2022, I am keeping it simple.
Here’s mine: Get to the second try as soon as possible.
What does that mean? No waiting for perfection. No waiting for some phantom level of success before starting. Don’t try to figure out what could go wrong. Get that first try done, and figure the rest of it out that way. Not sure about the topic for your summit? Just do it and you will figure it out. Not quite sure about your manuscript? Hit publish and see. Not sure if you are ready to start a podcast? Hit record and get the first episode done and posted.
Most of the time we worry about being so new at something, that we wonder… what will happen if we mess up?
If you are super new, nobody will know if you do and…
everyone (I mean everyone) messes something up the first time. But you never know what that will be until you try it first.

The other night, we watched “We Bought A Zoo,” starring Matt Damon.
It is based on the story of Benjamin Mee and how he moved his family to the countryside of Southern California to renovate a struggling zoo.
With the exception of a few unnecessary curse words, it is a great family movie.
One of the themes of the movie is that all it takes to do something incredible is… 20 seconds of insane courage.
In the movie, Matt Damon used that mindset to not only purchase the zoo, but also shared that it was how he met his late wife.
When you break things down in to little bursts of courage like that, things don’t seem too bad.
When I first started reaching out to influencers to host my very first virtual summit, it seemed like an insurmountable task.
When you look at the list of tasks for the summit as a whole, it does seem completely overwhelming. How will I ever get all those people to agree to be interviewed? How willI know what to ask them? How will I not embarrass myself? And the list goes on…
But in each case, it only took me 20 seconds of insane courage to email them and ask.
Now, I have partnered with over half of that first group of speakers on other offers (probably more like 75% of them).

Nearly every year we watch some version of A Christmas Carol. Chances are you have too.
There is some real joy in watching Ebenezer Scrooge see the error in his ways, and make amends at the end of the movie.
Those he had wronged in life, showed grace and class by forgiving him in the end.
The story follows on Scrooge on three adventures of self-exploration, with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.
What he learns in each of those places is something we can all use.
1) Visiting the past, is to help us realize what actually happened and learn from it. But do not dwell there. We cannot change anything.
2) Considering the present, we see the situation those past actions have created (good or bad). We need to decide if this is where we want to stay.
3) The Future view is where we will be if we change nothing. Yet, it is not set in stone. You can start changing your outcomes, and you can start today.
Scrooge got back from those three visits, and immediately changed his outlook demeanor, and actions.
If we each look at our past, present and future, in can be very enlightening.
For many of us, the path may be clear and the future looks bright.
For most, there are always some things that can be tweaked. Sometimes even major changes are necessary.
For me, I can always fight harder against procrastination, and also start standing firmer for what I believe in.
For you it may be something else.
But the next time you watch Scrooge in action, think about what you can do to change your outcomes based on where you came from, where you are today and where you want to go.

Last night I introduced my kids to the Rankin / Bass Christmas classic, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.
The movie takes place in Sombertown, and focuses on its sadistic and oppressive mayor, The Burgermeister Meisterburger (this description sounds eerily like a few cities in the US and around the world these days).
The Burgermeister Meisterburger outlaws toys, and it is up to young Kris Kringle to find creative ways to get them to the kids anyway.
He starts sneaking down chimneys and hiding toys in the stockings that have been hung to dry by fireplaces.
Of course, Kris Kringle outlasts the Burgermeister Meisterburger and becomes Santa Claus.
In our world, the Burgermeister Meisterburger can be anything that is stopping you from living your passion, and sharing your message with the world.
That can be things like book site algorithms, big tech playing favorites, or simply your uncertainty of what to do next in your journey.
That is why building your circle of influence, with like minded friends and clients is going to be a huge part of 2022. What can you do about it?

When I was around 6 or 7 years old, the rumors started swirling about whether or not Santa Claus was real.
I hadn’t given it too much thought that day (It was just a couple of days before Christmas).
It was already dark, and I was comfortably watching TV in our family room.
Our family room wasn’t really built as a TV room. We had a small TV on a TV stand squeezed in between the fireplace on its right, and a sliding glass door to our redwood deck on the left.
What the setup was good for was what happened next.
There was about one foot of snow on the deck, and that made noise as something was coming up the outside steps to the deck.
I couldn’t believe it. I jumped to my feet. Santa Claus was standing on our deck!
My Dad quickly went to the sliding glass door and unlocked it. Santa came in and gave us each a present, wished us a Merry Christmas, and exited the way he came in.
I was stunned and excited.
But more than that, I believed.
That little incident extended my belief in Santa for many more years than it would have without it.
I even recall having friends say, “There is no such thing as Santa.”
To which I could confidently say, “Yes there is. I saw him.” I would then go on to retell my tale.
They all were in awe after the story, and I dare say I extended the belief in Santa for a few extra years for those friends. Sometimes it just takes a small event to make you believe.
For instance, if you are dabbling in an online side hustle, or trying to figure out how to make a business out of your book, it sometimes just takes meeting a few other people who believe in you.
Those people are your network. They can help in many ways, from helping you promote your business to just giving advice or moral support.

This past Thanksgiving we spent with my Mom, in Cleveland. We drove over 30 hours each way for the 3 week adventure.
While there, I was briefly reintroduced to Reality TV. (I got rid of cable TV 6 years ago, and most of those shows went with it)
While there, my Mom and I watched a current episode of Survivor.
I couldn’t help but think back to that original first season of Survivor, that set the tone for the entire series (and really, the new face of Reality TV).
Richard Hatch, the winner of Season 1, had been the villain most of the series. But you had to hand it to him, he went into with the mindset of winning the game.
I recall him casually mentioning to someone early on… “Want to form an alliance?”
And the rest is history.
Every subsequent season has been a mad scramble to build alliances, and try to outlast everyone else. All because Richard had that original brilliant idea.
When I was starting out online and with book publishing, I thought building “alliances” was something for much further down the road.
I was completely wrong.
Building your “alliances” is something you should be doing from the get go.
Though it is a little more difficult in the beginning, you will be so thankful that you started sooner rather than later.
This is true whether all you are doing is building an audience for your book, or you are building an online business, your alliances are what will expedite your journey. They will also carry you when times are lean.
One of the easiest ways to break the ice, and build those relationships is to have something of value to share with those people you want to meet.
No, a free copy of your book does not qualify.
But putting them in front of a new audience does.
That audience can be the one at your virtual summit, none of which has to come from directly from you.
The other speakers create the valuable potential audience that can be used to lure

Back in college, money was always tight. And of course, so was time (we needed lots of “hang out” time in those days).
One of the first things I learned to do to save time and money was cut my own hair.
There was nothing elaborate about it for us men. I bought some Wahl clippers, and figure out the height needed (12mm on top and 8mm on the sides).
Then I was a 10 ft walk to the dorm bathroom to cutting perfection.
I got reasonably good at it, and have done it ever since. I figure I have saved probably in the 10-20k lifetime and 1000s of hours in the process.
Word got around campus about me cutting hair, as occasionally other guys came for quick fixes.
Then one day came the scare.
Word in our hall was that Stacy Brandt, the biggest and fiercest football player on campus, was looking for me.
He was someone, not even the other huge football players would mess with. I got along with everyone, so what was this all about?
Stacy came to me and wanted his hair cut. More specifically, he wanted a mohawk.
Yikes! I had never done that, and while I was capable, the thought of messing up on Stacy Brandt was not a pleasant thought.
So we went down to the dorm bathroom, and got set up.
Word started to spread, and we ended up with a small audience while I performed my trade. That didn’t help my already perspiring hands.
When the moment of truth came, Stacy stood up and looked in the mirror.
He said, “I love it.”
He thanked me a took off. The rest of the audience commented to me on what a good job I did, and how scary that mohawk made Stacy look (which was his desired result).
From that moment on, Stacy always made an effort to recognize me around campus.
One day, I was swimming laps in the indoor pool at the athletic complex. Suddenly, a voice came over the loud speaker in the lobby and the pool area. Ray my barber, what’s up buddy!?!?!
I waved and remember being so pumped I could hardly wait to go tell my friends back at the dorm.
His implied endorsement gave me status, and it was great.
I was reminded of that feeling a couple of years ago when I hosted my first virtual summit.

Yesterday was an incredibly busy and successful day for me.
I hosted a webinar for a good friend and JV Partner. The webinar was about my new Six-Figure Author Summit Program.
We jumped on the Zoom 10 minutes early to get set up and shoot the breeze. As we were talking and brainstorming, I threw out an idea of a joint venture for 2022.
He thought about it a minute and said it sounded like a good idea. So he was considering it.
Then came time to turn on the webinar, and let his audience in. What does he do next?
He introduces me to his audience and promptly tells them that we just agreed to a joint venture a couple of minutes earlier.
I was pumped!
And in fact, the idea we came up with makes sense to do with a lot of my partners.
All these great things happened, and I hadn’t even started the presentation yet.
That type of thing doesn’t just happen out of the blue.
We had a relationship for a few years, ever since I interviewed him and had him as a guest on my first virtual summit.
That has to be my favorite thing about virtual summits. It speeds up relationships (and friendships) with like-minded and niche-related people.
There are so many more benefits to virtual summits, but relationship building is by far the most important in my book. Imagine having someone you look up to on your speed dial (or speed text anyway).
Here is the best part for me: Two years ago, I didn’t even know what a virtual summit was.
I hosted one because I saw everyone else do it. When it finished, I saw just how powerful an effect it can have on your business.
So impactful, in fact, that I wanted to become an expert at summits.
I dove right in.
Then I decided I wanted to move faster, so I licensed some content from my summit mentor at the time, in order to create a done-for-you service.
In a way, I borrowed someone else’s business to jump start mine.
I ultimately ended up with my own set of content, procedures and style.

Then they can use a summit to build their own relationships and move forward much faster.
