Troy Broussard, or “Mr. Prolific”, is one of my mentors and the amount of ongoing content and offers he creates are staggering.
He builds it all to fit the exact real time wants and needs of his audience.
So, when he says something, even subtly, I pay attention.
I recently participated in his 30 Day book challenge, and the first thing he had us do was decide what type of book we were writing.
Most of us probably don’t spend the time to do that (I know I rarely have in the past).
In my case, I determined my new book, Book Profit Secrets (coming in Q2) is a positional book. The goal is to position me as an expert in my industry.
That little 10 minute exercise changed how I wrote the book, and I have no doubt will change the long term results of the book as well.
One of Troy’s books, Infusionsoft Mastery, positioned him as an Infusionsoft expert. In fact, people would quote him from his book while asking questions to the Infusionsoft team at their conferences. The result?
Troy has made $327k in consulting fees and programs, all as a result of his positioned and well deserved authority from the book.

My current three favorite sweatshirts (all the Life Is Good brand), are now at their peak.
Officially, they are much older than 4 years old. And truth be told I buy that brand in general because they are already softer when you purchase them (much further along than most other new sweatshirts).
For me there is nothing better than your favorite soft, broken in sweatshirt, on a cool day. Or in the case of Arizona, a day with cool air conditioning.
The same can be said about online business.
It just takes a while to break in.
It was nearly four years ago when I went full-time online (I sold my brick and mortar business). I saw many ups and downs during that time, including some points where I thought I might have to get a job.
And now, it finally feels like my business is broken in and comfortable.
Part of the reason for that is the implementation of high ticket programs.
In fact, had I known better, high ticket is where I would have started.

Make your efforts worth your while almost immediately
Higher Margins
Attract better clients (who appreciate you more), and may become future partners
Can be customized to the individual, because you can afford to
Increase your confidence (and that of your clients)
Create an incredibly effective “descension model” in your business (which makes selling easier)

This morning I completed a “last minute” interview with my friend Rob Kosberg for the High Ticket Author Summit (starts Monday).
After we finished, I reviewed my notes and realized the ideal title was… The Blue Ocean High Ticket Program: Offering What Nobody Else Does and Blowing Your Clients Away
Rob is the founder of Bestseller Publishing, and talking to him is a literal masterclass in how to run a high ticket business.
He has run so many, and has made over 3 million on the backend of just one book alone.
During the conversation, he brought up the topic of finding new Blue Oceans and creating a high ticket program for them.
If you aren’t familiar with Blue Ocean Strategy (from the book of the same name published in 2004 written by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne), the basic idea is that most people compete in Red Oceans (they are red because so much competition is literally bloodying up the water).
The idea of finding Blue Oceans, where there are very few competitors, either because the market is new, or your offer stands heads and tails above everyone else.
In fact, the topic was so compelling, that we nearly created a joint venture right then and there (we decided to discuss it off air).
We also discussed how one of the ways to create a Blue Ocean Offer is to join forces with others to create “super high tickets.”

I call it the bittersweet symphony (in reference to the song by The Verve).
It was December 25, 2016. I was visiting my parents in Cleveland, and pulled out the laptop just to check on the status of my book launch.
My very first solo book was now ranked as a best seller on Amazon!
I took my laptop, and busted in the bathroom, where my wife was showering. I literally shoved the laptop just out of reach of the water stream pouring down and said check this out… It’s a bestseller!
I had made it (or so I thought). I was now going to get that passive income, and be financially independent. I already knew the titles of the next couple of books, they would fit into a series with this first one.
Here comes the bittersweet part of the symphony.
About three weeks later, mid to late January 2017, I went back in to peek at my KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) royalties. The book had been a bestseller for a couple of weeks. I had done everything the writing and publishing course taught me to do. That included ads, promotions, and a launch team.
I looked at the numbers and calculated what the monthly royalties were going to be for January, if they continued the way they were going.
My heart just sank.
The January estimate was coming in at approximately $20 a month.
It was then that I realized something that Nick Nanton so eloquently puts like this… “You make money from having a book, not selling a book.”
So how does one make money from having a book?
By having back end products, services, programs, etc.
I have spent the past two years almost exclusively reaching out to and interviewing successful authors and asking what they are doing on the back end.
And I have implemented many of the things they recommended.
But I have found that one method stands above the rest, and it is consistent what almost every successful author I have talked to has. It is a high ticket program.
This could be something like a mastermind, coaching, done-with-you or done-for-you service.
And before you say, I can’t or don’t want to do that…
please know, that is exactly how I felt for a long time.
Then when I launched my first service, that mindset changed.
High Ticket Programs:

When I was little (very little) we had one TV in the house that used rabbit ears (an antenna on top) and did not have a remote.
My Dad used bean bag chair on the ground in front of it, so he could lean forward and change the channel using the knob on the set itself.
Not too big a deal since we were just happy to watch it.
The problems used to arise when there was more than one thing to watch.
That could happen on NFL Football Sundays, or times like right now during March Madness (the NCAA Tournament).
You see, my Dad was by nature, a Channel Changer.
In fact there didn’t even have to be another game on another channel. The moment the game we (the rest of the family) wanted to watch went to a commercial, he was changing the channel.
Usually to some old John Wayne western.
By the time he thought to change it back to the game, we would inevitably hear the announcer say… “That was the greatest play in the history of football…”
We always missed something.
It got so bad that when he changed the channel, my sister and I would look at each other and mouth the words… What the heck???
Those of course were the days before remotes and DVRs.
I am glad we have advanced as far as we have, because I am faced with my own dilemma this week.

P.S. Even in his later years my Dad never changed, he continued to change channels. Only he had a lot more channel options and a remote. But the technology (DVR) made it so we didn’t miss things! Plus we had multiple TVs in the house.

This was it. The holomessage confirmation to his Dad alerted him on his watch. At least that made it out. He stood on the footwall, faced with the enemy on three sides, and a thundering Niagara behind him. The irony in all of this was that he had always been an extremely good swimmer. He took a last look at the coming dawn, then his adversaries. They closed in to grab him, but in one fluid motion he turned and did a swam dive. The was water pouring over the falls next to him, but he heard nothing except the screeching wind. Then black…

Yea, I know, needs work. But that is the first draft ending to the Prologue of my first ever fiction novel. It will be written under a pen name.
When I showed the entire thing to my 10-year old son, he loved it and keeps asking if I have written any more yet.
He also gave me some pointers. The story starts inside a bar, near Niagara Falls. He suggested I give more description about what the bar is like on the inside.
I told him that was a great suggestion, and asked him how he knew to suggest it.
He told me from all the reading he is exposed to (we have read or told him stories nearly every night of his life). He is a natural.
Exposure many times is the key to the confidence in starting something. Exposure to others’ positive energy, or just by hanging around the people who have done what you want to do.
That is why, if you are a fiction author, or plan to be, it is always helpful to surround yourself with others fiction authors. You will learn from them, AND absorb their energy.

When the movie The Secret came out in 2006, I was instantly attracted to the content. It was a documentary about the Law of Attraction that felt like some kind of mystery and adventure film.
Of course, it was the personalities and what they shared that made the film so great.
At the time, I had recently left a bad relationship and personal happiness seemed so far away.
I was also still working in the corporate world, and though I had a good job, I wouldn’t for long. A few months later I would be laid off (made redundant in some English speaking countries).
That movie changed how I looked at things. Many of the speakers resonated with me. In fact, two in particular:
Jack Canfield and Dr. Joe Vitale.
After that movie, I created a little wallet-sized affirmation card and laminated it.
It said… I am so thankful I have married my dream girl. We have such a wonderful life. She loves me unconditionally. She is fun, witty, adoring, classy, social, loyal, athletic, and a great mother. She likes to travel with me, and likes to stay home and cuddle with me. Life is beautiful!
It has remained in my wallet ever since.
I even put a date on it July of 2009. I gave myself 3 years to achieve the goal.
In September 2008, a full 10 months ahead of schedule, I met my wife.
The odds of it happening were super slim. We were both on vacation, and it was just a chance encounter at a late afternoon visit to a “cantina” in Puerto Vallarta.
Any little glitch in the space-time continuum, and it would never have happened.
Now when I review that affirmation card, every bit of it came true. She checks all the boxes I shared with the Universe.

On September 20, 1977, during an episode of the sitcom Happy Days, Fonzie (played by Henry Winkler) jumps over a shark while water skiing.
I realize I am dating myself, but I actually watched that episode when it aired as a kid (a very young kid for those doing the math).
It was part three of a three-episode stint that took place in and was aptly named Hollywood.
I remember those three episodes feeling so out of place. They were out of their natural environment (most episodes took place in small midwest setting, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
I stopped watching after that episode, for no other reason than I lost interest.
It turns out, a lot of people did (although the show still had high ratings for years).
In 1985, a guy at University of Michigan coined a phrase about that episode, calling it jumping the shark.
The meaning is some type of misguided attempt to generate attention for something that is perceived to have once been widely popular, but is no longer.
In short, it signifies peak popularity. The beginning of the end.
It turns out when Fonzie jumped that shark, America let out a collective gasp, and the show was never the same for a lot of people.
Funny thing, I have seen that in the self-publishing world as well.
In the past couple of years, I have seen some folks I looked up to, jump the shark.
Some started shilling new made up crypto currencies or other investment schemes to authors (which makes no sense). Then others jump on new beta programs by Amazon and call them “algorithm changes” in order to sell courses.
My reaction to each felt the same as that moment when Fonzie, in shorts and his leather jacket, jumped the shark. WTF was that? (I would say to myself after reading their emails)
I can’t tell you what bothered me more, my disappointment or embarrassment that I followed them in the first place.
That is why I am very loyal to the ones who will stay loyal to their craft and audience.
Honorée Corder is one of those, the good ones. She is loyal to her craft, and it shows in everything she does.

Last month, I was on the hot seat.
I was front and center in Honorée Corder’s Mastermind.
A hot seat is a focused session, where you ask for help and feedback on a particular topic.
My topic was about creating a unique mastermind. I had a few preconceived ideas in my head of what it might look like.
Afterward, my mastermind looked completely different.
I was blown away by the ideas thrown at me. It completely changed how I will structure my mastermind, but also how compatible it will fit in with everything else I am doing.
The ideas and encouragement from all the members in the group were amazing.
For example, I was picturing a typical mastermind where you show up and the leader teaches.
But in my case, after feedback from the group, the mastermind will be more focused on getting the members speaking gigs on summits and podcasts, and teaching them to host their own summits as well as creating other income streams like Bookfunnels and virtual book tours. It is so easy to underrate what you have to offer, until you get input from others.
New ideas or ways of thinking are the most important aspects of anything you spend your time on. (More on my mastermind later)
Those same type of ideas, and idea makers, are participating in Honorée’s Empire Builders Summit this week (starting tomorrow).
